About the Alberta Driver’s Licence Program

Alberta has a Graduated Driver Licensing program in place. Learners can obtain their learner’s licence as early as age 14 by successfully passing a written exam. A basic road test can be taken at the age of 16. Any person, regardless of what age they are, must hold a Class 7 learner’s licence for a minimum of 1 year, after which they are eligible to take the basic road test.

Once they successfully pass the basic road test, they will be issued a Class 5 Graduated Licence. A Graduated Licence holder must hold that licence for a minimum of 2 years to qualify for the Advanced Road Test which, once passed, will enable that person to become a fully licensed driver.
