Drivers Licence

Alberta now has the Graduated Driving program in place.  Learners can obtain their learners licence as early as age 14 and must hold their learners license for a minimum of 2 years.  After 2 years as a driversLicense.jpglearner they then qualify for a Basic Road Test and once they pass,  will be issued a class 5 Graduated Licence.  A Graduated Licence holder must hold their licence for an additional one year to qualify for the Advanced Road Test which once passed will enable them to become a fully licensed driver.

If you have any medical conditions or physical disabilities that may effect your driving when applying for or renewing your Alberta Driver’s Licence, you will be required to bring in a Medical Examination form completed by your physician.  Some of these conditions include:  Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease, diabetes, or heart disease.

Alberta has one of the most secure driver’s license in North America. It is made of a high-tech polycarbonate material that incorporates security features that have been used to produce currency, passports, etc. The card that is produced is considered tamper-proof and is made with features that are immediately apparent if tampered with in any way.

Your new Alberta Driver’s License is printed in a high security facility and sent to you by mail. You will receive an interim driver’s licence that is a valid operator’s licence, although it may not be used for identification. You will receive your new Alberta Operators License within two (2) weeks.

Alberta Identification Cards are also available and are produced in the same manner as the Alberta Driver’s Licence.
